gas can rules in boat?

Salvatore Walls: As long as there on deck and not below. If the boat has a water drains outboard so the fumes can Escape but if not than I wouldn't as ant leakage and they go below deck U could have issues.

Shawn Lelis: As long as they are approved gas cans, you should be able to transport fuel on a boat.

Teodoro Lamond: Gas cans should be of a type approved by the local fire marshal. Unfortunately, you won't find portable gas cans approved by the Coast Guard. Cans made of plastic or metal are fine as long as they have tight fitting closures and spouts that can be set to contact the opening where fuel will be poured into to reduce the potential for static electricity build-up. I like the small marine gas cans sold at West Marine and Boat US or similar places as many are specific for marine use. All have filler screens to keep the fuel entering your motor clean and will withstand the marine environment. Remember that metal cans rust fast, so if you use one, get! a sturdy one that will hold up. Again, the heavy duty polymer/plastic cans do well as long as you do take care of them and don't puncture them. Keep them out of sunlight as much as possible, fill them only about 3/4 full so when the fuel expands it won't ooze out and you should be fine. One last thought, store it above decks in a ventilated area away from any source of ignition and never smoke around it. Lastly, check with your local Coast Guard Auxiliary to see if they have any specific requirements in your area.Good luck and Safe Boating!...Show more
