safety of motorcycles vs the safety of driving without seat belts?

Jose Calaycay: This is one of those kinds of questions that depend on how the statistics are jumbled around in order to possibly reach ones own preconceived notions. There are so many more year round vehicles on the road verses motorcycles that the deaths from enclosed vehicle accidents are going to dwarf any motorcycle accident statistics in shear numbers.I'm still somewhat confused by mandatory safety belt usage in vehicles verses voluntary helmets on motorcycles. Go figure....Show more

Darcie Peraha: Cars are safer, even without wearing a seat belt. First off you aren't going to fall over. I don't care how good are a rider you are, you still face the risk when you are on the bike that you'd lean to far in a turn or something and tip. Another one is all these bikers who say oh I need my bike so loud because car drivers can't see me. BS, BUT they need an excuse. So you are telling me that car drivers can't see you, yet you feel safe riding? They just want to be lou! d to show they are riding....Show more

Mohamed Szollosi: more in cars because there more of them on the road

Jana Sakasegawa: I had a state cop in Colorado tell me straight up that their reasoning for not having a helmet law was that the chances of a person being fatally injured was significantly greater and saves the state money as more people survive bike wrecks with helmets and many become parylized or incapacitated. They rather have fatalities and not have to support permantly injured survivors through the state medicaid health funds. Now that is sobering.

Serita Hefferon: Motorcycle deaths in 2008 were 5,290.....Non use of seat belt deaths in 2008 were 5,500............
